Inventing a checklist for Surgical Safety which prepares a team for the unexpected!
Little things like everyone has introduced themselves by their name by the start of the day, because sometimes they work as a team like this for the first time ever. They implemented this checklist in eight hospitals around the world:
- Seattle, USA
- Toronto, Canada
- Ifakara, Tanzania
- New Delhi, India
- London, UK
- Amman, Jordan
- Manila, Phlilippines
- Auckland, NZ
After adopting the checklist in these hospitals the complication rate fell 35%! The death rates fell 47%!
And still it is not the norm to use these checklists! Why not? If it really makes working together better and more efficient, why do we not use all checklists in every single possible way!? Making systems work! Making system works wether in education, health care is the great task of our generation!!!
Atul Gawande: “As individualistic as we want to be, complexity requires group success.”
